Actually, controlling anxiety isn’t exactly possible, as it is a disorder that is generally based on fear. And the best way to overcome the fear is to face it. However, stress can be a trigger to that unwanted fear, and controlling the stress IS possible. Whatever your reason for your stress or anxiety, you can learn some simple ways to relieve it.
Society expects each of us to be responsible and productive individuals. Whether it be earning a living, attending school, parenting, helping others, or just being a good Samaritan, everyone should be able to take care of them selves and in many cases, others too. Controlling anxiety is one way to help us perform better as an individual.
Our anxieties can be a stumbling block to us when we try to carry out any of these roles in part, because most of theses roles in life require us to endure a certain measure of stress, and stress is often the major trigger that makes us anxious.
As an attempt to controlling anxiety, it can be difficult to figure out the exact origin of the anxiety and stress. It could stem from negative aspects of childhood, but may not show up until later when it is triggered from stress in adult life.
Keep in mind, there is such a thing as good stress. An uneasy or fearful feeling can be a response to physical danger, thus helping you to decide when to fight or flee. That kind of stress would be considered self-protection, which is good.
Another example of good stress would be a major life change that is positive, like getting married. It could make you feel stressed, but it’s a good stress. Controlling anxiety about getting married would not be on our list of anxieties that we want to control, because, that is one that makes you happy!
Those kinds of anxieties may prove to be helpful, but the kind that causes you internal struggle with opposing feelings is definitely not helpful.
Our brains experience stress and anxiety in slightly different ways. Controlling anxiety is more about controlling a fear. An anxiety disorder is diagnosed when those anxieties interfere with our daily functions. Controlling anxiety is really more about controlling the stress that triggers it.
Thrive on it:
While we have to learn to manage stress, keep in mind that we cannot terminate it forever. We need to learn to thrive on it and stay in control of it on a daily basis. People who thrive on stress will treat stress differently when it comes. If a crises arises, they will see it as an opportunity rather than letting it stress them out.
Learning to thrive on it is hard for some people. There are ways to relieve some of the stress to stay in control of our daily actions and thoughts. If you lose control, it will take over and can lead to major health problems. Start controlling anxiety today and practice the skills to help relieve the daily anxieties before it has a chance to rule your life.
Some helpful ideas for controlling anxiety
Use guides to help you find solutions with controlling anxiety and stress. Set up an exercise plan to relieve your joints and muscles of excessive tension that builds up when you do not stay active.
Create a plan. Plan to exercise three or four days each week. The new activities will help you to feel like a new person.
Set some goals so that you have a purpose in mind. Write down why you want to exercise and what you plan to do to reach you goal. For instance, perhaps you can devise a plan to walk three blocks the first week, six blocks the second week and so on.
Keep your goals in sight and thrive to meet that five-mile distance in six weeks. While you are working your way to reach that five-mile goal, plan to relax daily, and give your mind and body a break.
Use your goals as a guide to relieve daily stress build up. Having written goals to make certain changes in your life, will relieve worries and help you to make better decisions.
Practice meditation to guide your body and mind into relaxation so that you sleep better. By sleeping more restfully at night, when you wake up in the morning you will be glad to see a new day arrive.
Consider a less involved schedule. Many of us try to do too much. Make your life more simple, so that you have the time to relax and focus.
Learn how controlling anxiety and the mental pressures will help you to feel more at ease each day, which in turn will help you make better decisions. Learn to reduce the worries that you have control of, and let go of the rest that you do not have the power to change.
Use your calendar as a guide to plan outside daily activities. Include your appointments and activities, marking them in red lettering.
Eat a healthy diet. Nutrition plays a big role in helping our brains function better, thus making it easier when it comes to controlling anxiety.
Controlling Anxiety and Work
The workplace can be very stressful for all of us. Practice focusing on work and leave other stresses at home. Stop and refocus when you feel pressured. Focusing is a form of meditation that takes practice and skill. So practice daily to relieve your mental tension by learning how to focus on one task at a time. We all have to work to be successful in our lives; learn to focus so that you do a good job. Use your imagination.
After a long anxiety and stress filled day at work and then managing all the errands at home, it can make a good sleep almost impossible. Try this. Find a quiet dark room or area where you can be alone and light some candles. Let your imagination take you off to an island somewhere, be creative and listen to the trees move or imagine you see butterflies. Allow your guided imagination to take you on a road trip where peace rests at the end of the journey. Controlling anxiety can be relaxing and fun!
